HOW TO REACH TAWANG?
Since Tawang is located far away from many metropolitans cities in India, it is quite difficult to reach Tawang by road.

Guwahati airport is located at a distance of 510 Km from Tawang and most of the cities have direct flights to it. Another airport near Tawang is Tezpur Airport which has direct to and fro flights from Kolkata.

There is also a “Helicopter Service” which was started by the Indian government to some locations like Itanagar, Pasighat, and Tawang directly from Guwahati.
Inner Line Permit
An inner line permit is a travel permit to enter and travel the protected areas of India for security and preservation purposes. It allows inward to travel to Indian citizens staying outside these restricted areas for 15 days. This permit must be obtained by people living outside Arunachal Pradesh before their visit. The ILP can be availed at Arunachal DC Office at Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Tezpur, and other district headquarters. Alternatively, you can also apply for the permit online here.
Local transportation in Tawang
Local transportation in Tawang is limited to Sumos ( Jeep-like vehicle, in which locals commute from one place to another) and private cabs.
If you are low on budget you can travel in Sumo’s in Arunachal Pradesh but the disadvantage of traveling in sumo is that you don’t get to stop and visit places en route Tawang as there will be fewer stoppages. You can also hire a private cab which will turn out to be more convenient and a little expensive.
If you want to drive or ride on your own then you will have to check the availability of a Car or Motorcycle in Guwahati or Tezpur. If you are not an experienced driver then we recommend you to take a private cab as the road conditions are not good enough. Hiring a cab will also be beneficial because the driver will be localite and he might be of great help in your journey.
PLACES TO VISIT IN TAWANG
Tawang Monastery is 2nd largest in Asia and located near the top of the mountain. It has its religious importance and is a significant pilgrim center for followers of Buddhism. You can visit this monastery for its amazing infrastructure and also have insights about Buddhism.
Se La Pass
Se La Pass is one of the highest motorable pass in India which connects Tawang to Dirang and Guwahati. It is at an elevation of 13,700 ft above the sea level and the views are simply surreal. You can also visit immaculate Se La Lake near the Se La Pass but make sure to visit it before darkness to get some really good pictures.
At a height of 100 meters, the Nuranang Falls is situated in the deep forest of Tawang city and remains undiscovered by the many. The view of this fall is splendid and picturesque. This fall is part of Nuranang River which originates at Sela Pass and one cannot afford to miss this marvelous fall.
Tawang War Memorial
Tawang war memorial is dedicated to martyrs of the 1962’s Sino-India War. At the entrance, you will encounter a 40-feet colorful structure. Tawang war memorial is open 7 days a week and timings for Tawang war memorial is from 7.45 AM to 6.00 PM.
Madhuri Lake originally known as Sangetsar lake got its name after Madhuri Dixit as one of her Song from the film Koyla was shot here. This lake is situated 25 Km from Tawang and requires a special permit by Indian Nationals. Foreigners might not be allowed here depending upon the situation, you can confirm this with the locals before visiting there.
Bum La Pass
Bum La Pass at a height of 15,200 Ft and at a distance of 37 Km from Tawang. This pass marks the Indo-China border and foreigners are not allowed due to security purposes. A special permit is required to visit this pass due to security purposes and it can be availed at Arunachal DC Office.
